Our exterior painting services

We deliver exterior painting for residential, commercial and strata properties across the entire Sydney metropolitan area.

Residential Exterior Painting

The exterior of your home is exposed to the harshest conditions of any surface you own, Sydney sun, harbour humidity, salt-laden coastal air, and seasonal storms. Our residential exterior painting services repaint and protect houses, terraces, semis, freestanding homes and townhouses. We handle facades, eaves, soffits, gutters, fascias, window frames, doors, garage doors, decks, fences, retaining walls and roofs.

We work across every Sydney housing typology, Federation homes in Annandale and Paddington, Victorian terraces in Surry Hills and Glebe, mid-century homes in Mosman and Cremorne, contemporary builds in the Hills District, and harbour-side residences in Vaucluse and Rose Bay.

Commercial Exterior Painting

We repaint office buildings, retail premises, restaurants, hotels, schools and warehouses across Sydney. Most commercial exterior painting work happens outside business hours or in staged sections to keep your operation running. Past projects include the InterContinental Hotel Double Bay and commercial fitouts across the CBD with Beyond Building Solutions.

Strata and apartment building exteriors

We paint apartment building facades, common-area exteriors, balcony railings, common walkways and external stairwells. Strata painting projects involve owners corporations, scaffolding and EWP coordination, dust and access management for residents, and staged work that keeps the building occupied throughout. We have the public liability cover and documentation strata committees require.

Exterior painting for every surface type in Sydney

Sydney homes are built from a mix of materials and each surface needs its own preparation method and paint system. We assess the substrate first, then specify a system designed for it.

Weatherboard and timber cladding

Weatherboard homes are common across the Inner West, lower North Shore and parts of the Eastern Suburbs. Timber expands and contracts with humidity, so we use flexible exterior systems over fully sanded, primed boards. We replace rotted boards, fill nail holes, caulk joints and prime bare timber before topcoats.

Render and masonry

Rendered facades are everywhere across modern Sydney builds and renovated Federation homes. Render fails in predictable ways, hairline cracks, drummy patches, efflorescence, and these need to be addressed before painting. We crack-bridge with elastomeric coatings where movement is active, repair drummy sections, and apply masonry-rated paint that lets the substrate breathe.

Brick and double brick

We paint brick exteriors with high-build masonry paints that bridge mortar joints and resist water ingress. For older Sydney homes with double-brick construction, we use breathable systems that don’t trap moisture inside the wall. Painting a brick house is a significant decision, we’ll walk you through the long-term implications at the quote.

Fibre cement (Hardiplank, Scyon, James Hardie)

Fibre cement cladding is common on contemporary Hills District and Inner West builds. The factory primer dulls over time, so we sand, prime any exposed cuts and apply two coats of exterior acrylic. Joins and end cuts need extra attention to stop moisture wicking into the sheet.

Metal — roofs, gutters and fences

Sydney’s salt-laden coastal air is hard on metal. We treat rust back to bare metal, prime with an etch primer, and topcoat with metal-rated paint — Dulux Roof Plus or equivalent for roofs, Dulux Super Enamel or Aquanamel for trims and gutters. We also handle timber and metal fence painting as part of an exterior package or as a standalone job.

Concrete

Concrete driveways, garage floors, retaining walls and pool surrounds need either a concrete-specific paint or a sealer-and-topcoat system. We grind, etch or pressure-clean depending on the surface, then apply UV-stable concrete coatings. See our guide to exterior wall coatings for more on protective systems.

Common exterior painting problems we solve in Sydney

After 25+ years painting across Sydney, we see the same problems repeatedly. Most are caused by Sydney-specific conditions, and most are preventable with the right paint system and preparation.

Salt damage on harbour-side and coastal properties

Exterior paint on properties in Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Bondi, Bronte, Dover Heights and other coastal areas degrades faster than inland Sydney. Salt accelerates rust on metal and breaks down standard exterior acrylics. We use marine-grade primers on metal and higher-spec acrylic systems on coastal homes, with more frequent maintenance recoats built into the long-term plan.

UV fade and chalking

The Sydney sun is intense, particularly on north and west-facing walls. Cheaper paint fades, chalks and loses gloss within two to three years. We specify UV-stable exterior systems with proven Sydney performance, typically 8 to 12-year repaint cycles on quality work, versus 4 to 6 years on budget systems.

Mould and humidity damage

South-facing walls, shaded eaves and rendered surfaces in damp conditions develop black mould. We treat with a fungicidal wash, allow full drying, then apply a mould-resistant primer before topcoats. Painting over active mould without treatment is one of the most common reasons exterior paint jobs fail prematurely.

Render cracking on older terraces and Federation homes

Older Sydney homes — Inner West terraces especially — develop render cracks from foundation movement, water ingress and natural ageing. We assess each crack at the quote: hairline cracks are crack-bridged with flexible fillers and coatings; structural cracks need investigation before painting, and we’ll flag this rather than paint over a problem.

Peeling, blistering and adhesion failures

Most peeling paint is caused by moisture trapped under the previous coat, painting over a glossy or chalking surface without prep, or using the wrong paint system for the substrate. We strip the failed paint back to a sound surface, address the root cause, and rebuild the system properly. See our blog post on common exterior paint problems for more.

  • Terrace facade only: $3,500–$8,000

Our exterior painting process

We follow the same documented process on every exterior job, scaled to the property size.

  1. On-site quote and scope. We come to your property, walk through the work, identify any prep or repair items, recommend a paint system, and provide a written quote with itemised pricing.
  2. Surface preparation. This is where most paint jobs are won or lost. We pressure-clean the entire exterior to remove dirt, mould and loose material. We scrape and sand peeling paint back to a sound substrate. We treat active mould or efflorescence. We repair render cracks, rotted timber and damaged areas.
  3. Priming. Every bare or repaired surface gets a primer matched to the substrate, etch primer for metal, masonry primer for render, sealer for chalking surfaces.
  4. Application. We apply two coats of premium exterior paint (Dulux, Taubmans, Resene or Haymes, our preference). For most exteriors we brush-and-roll; large flat areas may be sprayed under controlled conditions.
  5. Detail work. Eaves, fascias, gutters, window frames, doors and downpipes get separate attention and often a different paint system to the main walls.
  6. Final inspection. We walk the job with you before sign-off. Anything you flag gets fixed before we invoice.
  7. 5-year workmanship warranty. Every Dupaint exterior comes with a 5-year warranty on workmanship. If anything related to our work fails inside that window, we come back and fix it.

Frequently asked questions about exterior painting in Sydney

How often should I repaint my Sydney home's exterior?

Most Sydney exteriors need a repaint every 8 to 12 years on quality paint systems, more frequently on coastal or harbour-side properties where salt accelerates wear. At the quote stage we’ll tell you whether your exterior needs a full repaint or just touch-ups in problem areas. More on how long exterior paint lasts.

What's the best time of year to paint a Sydney exterior?

March to May and September to November are ideal in Sydney, stable temperatures, low humidity and manageable UV. Summer is workable but heat can affect drying. Winter painting is fine in dry weeks but rain delays can extend project timelines.

Do you handle the roof and gutters as part of an exterior paint job?

Yes. We can include the roof (Colorbond or tiled), gutters, eaves, fascias and downpipes in a single project, or quote them separately if you only need part of the work done.

Will the painters work around my family or business hours?

Yes. For residential exteriors we work standard daytime hours and clean up each day so your home is liveable throughout. For commercial exteriors we routinely work outside business hours or in staged sections to avoid disrupting your operation.
